Melissa Rivers: Joan Rivers’ Jokes Saved from Los Angeles Fire

by Diana Ward

Melissa Rivers recently shared that her late mother, Joan Rivers’ extensive collection of jokes was spared from the devastating Los Angeles fires.

While Melissa’s home in Pacific Palisades was destroyed, she revealed that some of Joan’s prized possessions were saved. Among them was a filing cabinet filled with index cards containing approximately 65,000 jokes Joan had written over her career, which spanned from 1950 until her passing in 2014.

“The jokes and the major archival pieces were fortunately saved about two and a half, three months ago for a national comedy center,” Melissa told People magazine.

Additionally, Joan’s “good” jewelry, which was kept in a bank vault, was also presumed safe from the fires.

Melissa, 56, also revealed that she was able to save her mother’s Emmy Award and a photo of her father, Edgar Rosenberg, from the flames. However, she emphasized that much of their belongings were lost.

“When we say we lost everything, you really have to see the video to understand,” she said. “It’s not just my life, but my son Cooper’s life too. We were both only children, and all of it is gone.”

Despite the loss, Melissa expressed that they are coping as best they can. “Cooper’s made of the same tough stuff I am, and we’re leaning on each other,” she added.
