One of the most awkward moments of this year’s Grammy Awards occurred when Spiritbox vocalist Courtney LaPlante was mistakenly identified as fellow Best Metal Performance nominee Poppy during a live interview. The incident quickly gained attention, leaving many viewers cringing on behalf of the interviewer.
As expected, social media users wasted no time in turning the blunder into a source of humor. Across various platforms, people shared jokes about the mistake and praised LaPlante’s response. Instead of correcting the interviewer, she played along, confirming she was Poppy and expressing excitement about “her” nomination alongside Knocked Loose. Impressively, she maintained the act for the full three-minute interview, demonstrating not only her knowledge of Poppy but also her ability to handle the situation gracefully, sparing the interviewer from further embarrassment.
However, the online jokes weren’t limited to metal fans. Even Spotify joined in, using its Kickass Metal playlist to acknowledge the mishap. The streaming giant updated the playlist page with an image of LaPlante and a tagline that read: “Poppy on top of today’s best Metal playlist.”
While Spotify’s business practices often spark controversy—particularly criticisms directed at CEO Daniel Ek—their quick-witted response to the mix-up drew laughs. If only they could address issues like AI errors affecting artists’ pages with the same efficiency, that would be a real improvement.
