Amy Schumer gave Kim Kardashian a heads-up before making a joke about her late father, Robert Kardashian Sr., in the new comedy Kinda Pregnant, now streaming on Netflix.
In one scene of the film, Schumer’s character, Lainy, reads a bedtime story while babysitting. The story comes from a satirical pop culture magazine titled Profile. Lainy says, “There was once a family of beautiful, beautiful princesses called the Kardashians. And they lived in a palace that their dad bought them by defending a murderer.”
During an appearance on The Howard Stern Show, Schumer, 43, shared that she reached out to Kim Kardashian, 44, for permission before making the joke. Schumer explained, “I called Kim and asked if she’d mind, and she didn’t mind. How cool is she? She was like, ‘Yeah, do the one about my dad defending a murderer.’ She was that chill.”
Schumer and Kim have worked together before. In a 2022 episode of The Kardashians, Schumer helped Kim rehearse her monologue for her Saturday Night Live debut.
Robert Kardashian Sr., who passed away in 2003, was a close friend of O.J. Simpson and served as his defense attorney during Simpson’s trial for the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman. Simpson passed away in April 2024 at age 76.
Schumer co-wrote Kinda Pregnant with Julie Paiva. Directed by Tyler Spindel and produced by Adam Sandler, the movie also stars Jillian Bell, Will Forte, Damon Wayans Jr., Brianne Howey, and others. In the film, Schumer’s character, Lainy, is a Brooklyn English teacher who, feeling jealous of her best friend’s pregnancy, wears a fake baby bump. She accidentally meets her dream man and gets caught up in a growing lie. Schumer has described the movie as “laugh-out-loud funny and relatable.”
“The story shows women as human beings trying to make choices that are right for them and having fun along the way,” Schumer said, adding that society often makes women feel like they’re failing.
