Tennant Vows to Avoid Jokes at BAFTAs After Blanchett Incident

by Diana Ward

David Tennant has announced that he will avoid jokes that could make nominees uncomfortable when he hosts the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards.

Reflecting on last year’s ceremony, Tennant admitted that a joke about Cate Blanchett didn’t go as planned, leaving the actress visibly upset. Speaking to Radio Times, Tennant said, “The BAFTAs are supposed to be kind. Last year, we weren’t trying to roast anyone, but I made a joke about Cate Blanchett, and she seemed a little annoyed, a little upset.”

He continued, “I remember thinking, ‘Oh no, I think you’re amazing. I was just trying to be funny and highlight how many awards you’ve won, because we love you.’”

Tennant emphasized that his goal as host is to celebrate the industry, not make people feel uncomfortable. “If I’ve learned anything, it’s that I don’t want to pick fights or make anyone uneasy. If I have a style, it’s just that.”

Last year, Tennant made a lighthearted joke about Blanchett during his opening monologue. While discussing the evening’s potential winners, he remarked, “I thought the seat planners would know where to put the winners, but no, they’ve got hidden cameras. If you have to climb over Cate Blanchett to grab an award, that’s what you do.”

He added with a smile, “It’s a metaphor for the acting industry,” which drew laughter from the audience.

Tennant’s approach contrasts with other award show hosts, who have embraced more daring humor. While events like the Golden Globes have leaned into roasting Hollywood’s elite, Tennant is clear that the BAFTAs should be a night of celebration, not discomfort.

The Scottish actor also shared his thoughts on the broader significance of awards.
