The National Commission for Women (NCW) has called YouTubers Samay Raina, Ranveer Allahbadia, Ashish Chanchlani, Apoorva Mukhija, and others for questioning after their comments on the popular comedy show India Got Latent sparked widespread controversy. The NCW has scheduled a hearing on February 7 at its New Delhi office.
The summons came shortly after the Maharashtra Police filed a case against the influencers over lewd jokes made during an episode of the comedy show, which led to a public outcry. The police registered the case after the cyber branch reviewed all episodes of the show. On the previous day, the Assam Police also filed a case against Ranveer Allahbadia, Samay Raina, and other influencers for allegedly promoting obscenity and engaging in vulgar discussions.
The Maharashtra Police has filed charges against 30 individuals, including Allahbadia, Mukhija, Raina, Rakhi Sawant, Chanchlani, and Balraj Ghai.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had hinted at possible action on Monday, stating, “Everyone has freedom of speech, but our freedom ends when we encroach upon the freedom of others.”
The Controversy The controversy began when Allahbadia asked a sexually explicit question to a contestant on the show, drawing sharp criticism. In response to the growing backlash, the National Human Rights Commission urged YouTube to remove videos containing Allahbadia’s remarks.
Allahbadia has since apologized, describing his comment as “inappropriate” and admitting that comedy was not his strength. “My comment wasn’t just inappropriate, it wasn’t even funny. Comedy is not my forte. I’m just here to say sorry. Many of you asked if this is how I want to use my platform, and obviously, this is not how I wish to use it. I’m not going to give any context or justification for what happened,” he said.
