Ryan Seacrest acknowledges that anything can happen in Times Square on New Year’s Eve, especially when it comes to proposals.
Ahead of his hosting duties for Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve on ABC, Seacrest, 50, appeared on Good Morning America to discuss the show’s long-standing tradition of impromptu proposals. “Yes, that’s something that’s happened almost every single year,” he said in an interview shared by People on December 30. “Some of it makes it to TV, some doesn’t, but people love that moment to say, ‘Will you be with me for the rest of our lives?’”
ABC correspondent Will Reeve, who recently proposed to his longtime girlfriend Amanda Dubin in New York, joked, “I should have done the proposal on New Year’s Eve with Ryan. Amanda would have said no.” Seacrest playfully responded, “There’s still time for me.”
Seacrest, who ended his three-year relationship with girlfriend Aubrey Paige in April, has previously been linked to celebrities like Julianne Hough and Shayna Taylor.
In response to Seacrest’s comment, Reeve joked, “You’ve got this, Ryan. We won’t rush you, though.”
While New Year’s Eve proposals capture attention, Seacrest is focused on his milestone 20th year hosting Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve. This year’s event will feature performances from Carrie Underwood, the Jonas Brothers, Thomas Rhett, Blake Shelton, and Lenny Kravitz, with plenty of surprises in store. Despite two decades of experience, Seacrest still finds excitement in the iconic ball drop in Times Square.
“I’ll never forget that moment when Dick Clark asked me to take over the show every year,” Seacrest recalled on Good Morning America, ahead of cohosting with Rita Ora. “I look forward to it. I get excited every time we’re able to watch that ball drop.”
Seacrest added that, with a million people gathered in Times Square and temperatures dropping, the moment remains unpredictable. “You never know what’s going to happen,” he said. “But in that moment, we’re all together. Our differences don’t matter for about a minute or two at the start of the year. That’s something so rare, so significant, and so special. It’s magical to watch.”
Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest airs live on ABC at 8 p.m. ET on December 31 and will also be available to stream on the iHeartRadio app.
