Fred Warner, the star linebacker for the San Francisco 49ers, had some playful remarks about his teammate, quarterback Brock Purdy, and his expected big payday.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Warner joked about how Purdy might spend his future earnings once he signs a likely massive contract extension with the 49ers. “Yeah, I think the first thing he’ll do is buy a bunch of chains, cars, houses — do the whole thing,” Warner said, laughing. “But nah, I think he’s for sure built the exact right way, and I couldn’t think of anybody else right now that you’d want to give that amount of money to than him, because he is built the exact right way.”
Purdy, who was listening nearby, responded shortly after with a grin, denying Warner’s playful claims but leaving room for some fun speculation. “If that does happen, I’ll deny that,” he said, before adding, “No.”
While Purdy’s sense of style has been noted, with comparisons to NFL quarterback Kirk Cousins, the 25-year-old is still in the final year of his rookie contract. For the upcoming 2025 NFL season, Purdy’s base salary is set at $1.1 million, but he is expected to sign a significant contract extension worth around $50 million with the 49ers this offseason.
Despite San Francisco’s 6-11 season, Purdy is optimistic about his future with the team. As NBC Sports Bay Area’s Jennifer Lee Chan reported, Purdy expressed his desire to remain with the 49ers, saying, “I want to be here in San Francisco.” He also shared his hope that contract negotiations with general manager John Lynch would be quick and private.
For now, Warner is enjoying the opportunity to joke around with his teammate. However, don’t expect Purdy to show up to training camp with extravagant purchases. It’s simply not his style.
