Couples who can joke about their sex lives tend to be more satisfied in their relationships, according to a recent study published in the Canadian Journal of Human Sexuality.
The research highlights that humor—especially “inside jokes, physical humor, and lightening awkward moments”—helps foster “comfort, fun, and closeness” among couples.
The study surveyed 196 people who had been in relationships for at least four months, with an average relationship length of over two years. Most participants were heterosexual women, around 20 years old.
Through online surveys, participants reported that positive jokes about sex led to greater satisfaction in their romantic lives. The study revealed that humor used by both partners in a positive way was linked to increased relationship and sexual satisfaction. On the other hand, negative humor from one partner was connected to lower satisfaction levels.
The study also found that positive sexual humor had a stronger impact on sexual satisfaction than overall relationship satisfaction. Researchers suggested that humor could help couples navigate awkward moments and feel more comfortable and connected with each other.
The study concluded that both sexual and relationship humor are key to improving relationship and sexual satisfaction.
