Wellenreuther Praises Feyenoord After Milan Win, Jokes ‘2-0 Would Have Been Better’

by Diana Ward

Feyenoord goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance in their 1-0 victory over AC Milan at De Kuip on Tuesday night, stating that “everything went well.”

The win marked a historic achievement for Feyenoord, as AC Milan became the first team to lose a knockout-stage match in the European Cup/UEFA Champions League to the Dutch side since 1974, when they defeated Coleraine.

The match’s only goal came early, just three minutes in, when Milan’s goalkeeper Mike Maignan allowed Igor Paixao’s long-range shot to slip past him. The ball appeared to bounce unexpectedly, and Maignan could only palm it into the net at his near post.

On the other side, Wellenreuther had a relatively quiet evening but managed to keep a clean sheet, an impressive feat considering Feyenoord had conceded 21 goals in the group stage of the competition.

Reflecting on the game in an interview with ESPN, Wellenreuther acknowledged the significance of the victory for both him and the team. “Today, everything went well. Although a 2-0 win would have been better for the second leg. Tuesday’s match will be tough. We’ll see how much this lead is worth,” he said.

He also praised his team’s defensive effort, saying, “When you keep a clean sheet, it’s always a good match. The whole team was strong today, and we defended well. Everyone gave their all, and that’s the most important thing.”
