Selena Gomez Surprised by SAG Win, Jokes Martin Short and Steve Martin Don’t ‘Care’

At the 2025 Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday, February 23, Selena Gomez took home the award for outstanding performance by an ensemble in a comedy series. The award was presented to the cast of Only Murders in the Building, but Gomez accepted it solo, as her co-stars Steve Martin and Martin Short were absent from the ceremony.

Martin had previously shared that Short had contracted COVID-19 while attending the SNL50: The Anniversary Special earlier in the week.

Upon receiving the award, Gomez joked, “We never win. This is so weird!” She then playfully poked fun at her missing co-stars, saying, “Marty and Steve aren’t here because, you know, they don’t really care.”

She continued, “But I just, I don’t know what to say… Thank you to Marty and Steve for — well they raised me. But I genuinely am just so grateful to everybody. The writers, everyone deserves this. And I take it home for all of us, and I’m bringing this back to New York for season five. Thank you so much. I’m so grateful.”

Only Murders in the Building, which also stars Martin and Short, follows three New Yorkers on the Upper West Side who bond over a shared love of true crime podcasts, only to find themselves embroiled in real-life mysteries.

Earlier this year, Martin and Short expressed their admiration for Gomez in an interview with PEOPLE, praising her both as a person and a performer. “She is so lovely as a human, she’s so remarkable as a talent, and she just has an aura and this lovely spirit. Our friendship grows and grows,” Short said. Martin added, “She is never late… and that’s a very big deal on sets.”

The other nominees for outstanding ensemble included Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Hacks, and Shrinking.

Abbott Elementary follows a group of teachers in a Philadelphia public school, with star and creator Quinta Brunson reflecting on how the show was born out of a desire to create something for everyone to enjoy. “We weren’t having the same laughs—and having the same laugh is really important to me. I think it’s spiritual, and it’s healing,” Brunson said.

The Bear tells the story of Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White), a fine dining chef who returns to his hometown to run his late brother’s sandwich shop. White shared that he and co-star Ayo Edebiri spent time at culinary school to prepare for their roles.

Hacks focuses on the relationship between veteran comedian Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and her young writer Ava (Hannah Einbinder). Smart, who plays Deborah, said she knew the role was perfect for her as soon as she read the script, adding that she was eager to prove herself as a comedian.

Shrinking stars Jason Segel as Jimmy Laird, a single dad dealing with grief. Segel’s co-star, Harrison Ford, has received praise for his portrayal of Paul, a character coping with Parkinson’s disease. Ford emphasized the importance of treating the subject seriously, saying, “There are people that absorb these kinds of experiences with grace and courage and a little bit of wisdom.”

This year’s SAG Awards celebrated a wide array of performances from across the television landscape, with each show bringing its unique charm and storytelling to the screen.
