Falcons Coach Jokes That the Tush Push Should Have Been Banned A Long Time Ago

by Diana Ward

As the NFL Scouting Combine begins, the debate over banning the Philadelphia Eagles’ Tush Push continues to grow, with critics and supporters weighing in on the controversial play.

The “Tush Push,” a powerful quarterback sneak used effectively by the Eagles and known as the “Brotherly Shove,” has drawn mixed reactions. While some call it a “cheap” tactic, others argue that teams should focus on finding ways to stop it rather than asking the NFL to intervene.

In response to the growing calls for a ban, the Green Bay Packers have taken action by submitting a formal proposal to the NFL. For the play to be officially prohibited, 24 teams must approve the measure. Atlanta Falcons coach Raheem Morris has expressed his opinion on the matter, humorously suggesting that the play should have been banned years ago.

“It should’ve been illegal three years ago,” Morris said on Tuesday. He also emphasized his disapproval of the play, stating, “There’s no other play in our game where you can absolutely get behind somebody and push them, pull them off, do anything.”

While Morris made light of the situation, Eagles coach Nick Sirianni expressed frustration over the proposed ban, feeling it was unfair to take away a play his team has worked hard to perfect.

“I almost feel a little insulted because we work so hard at that play,” Sirianni said. “The amount of things that we’ve looked into to coach that play, the fundamentals. There’s thousands of plays out there, but it comes down to how you teach the fundamentals and how the players execute them.”

Sirianni believes the Eagles’ success with the Tush Push reflects the team’s dedication and preparation, and he sees the push for a ban as an attack on that effort.

Meanwhile, Los Angeles Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh shared a more measured perspective, suggesting that teams should either learn to use the Tush Push to their advantage or focus on stopping it. Harbaugh, known for his candid approach, stated, “It just seems like it works every single time, but it seems like football to me. Get good at it or stop it.”

Harbaugh did not take a strong stance on the potential ban, noting that the discussions will likely continue through the offseason. “The quarterback sneak will never be eliminated from football,” he said. “I guess it’s the aspect of pushing [the player under center], and you’re not allowed to drag [the player holding the ball], but you are allowed to push.”
