Norris Jokes About Angry Australian Fans: “I Just Want to Leave Alive!”

by Diana Ward

Lando Norris secured his first pole position of the season in Melbourne, edging out teammate Oscar Piastri. Piastri initially set a fast lap and took provisional pole, much to the delight of local fans. However, Norris quickly followed, crossing the line to take the top spot.

During a press conference, Norris was asked how he felt about disappointing Australian fans. He responded with a smile, saying, “I’m pretty sad, actually. It’s bittersweet for me because I don’t like upsetting anyone.”

While Norris is sensitive to the feelings of fans, he emphasized the importance of doing his job. “But it’s also my job, and what I get paid to do. I have to go out and drive as fast as I can, as stated in my contract.”

Norris then compared the situation to the strong support Max Verstappen receives from his fans in places like Zandvoort and Spa, pointing out that every country strongly backs its home drivers. “It’s the same for me at Silverstone or Belgium. Actually, I can claim that one too, and sort of the Netherlands,” Norris joked.

Despite the rivalry, Norris expressed his gratitude for the support he receives from Australian fans. “The fans have always been very supportive of me. I’ve had an Australian teammate for a while now, so I’ve gotten used to it. I know they cheer for Oscar more, but I really appreciate the support I do get.”

Looking ahead, Norris hoped to leave Melbourne without any issues. “At the end of the day, my job is to drive as fast as I can. If that means pole, then I’m happy. But I do want to make it out of Australia without any trouble.”
