The Chicago White Sox released veteran outfielder Joey Gallo on Sunday following a disappointing spring training performance.
Since leaving the Texas Rangers in 2021, Gallo has played for five different teams. His stints included time with the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, Minnesota Twins, Washington Nationals, and most recently, the White Sox. Unfortunately, Gallo has struggled to find consistent success at these stops.
After his release, Gallo took to X, a social media platform he hadn’t used since 2022, to announce his decision to stop playing the outfield. He jokingly shared that he would be reinventing himself as a pitcher.
Gallo, who won two Gold Gloves in the outfield, is known for his strong arm. However, it seems he is ready to transition away from the position as he seeks another opportunity with an MLB team.
Last season with Washington, Gallo played 11 games as an outfielder but was mainly used as the first baseman, starting 54 of 76 games.
The 31-year-old struggled in spring training with Chicago, recording only two hits in 20 at-bats. His final Cactus League performance resulted in a .100/.143/.243 slash line, leading to his release. Once considered a top power hitter in MLB, Gallo has not hit more than 21 home runs in a season since 2021 and has posted batting averages below .200 since 2019.
