Conan O’Brien Was Approached About His Drake Oscars Joke

by Diana Ward

In a bonus episode of SiriusXM’s Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, Conan O’Brien and his head writer, Mike Sweeney, discuss the 2025 Oscars. During the conversation, Conan shares an interesting encounter from a store visit earlier that day, where he was approached about his joke involving Drake and Kendrick Lamar.

Conan recounts, “This has happened to me a couple of times,” before detailing the exchange. “I walked into a store this morning to grab a coffee, and a young black man came up to me and said, ‘Conan, I’ve got to ask you, did you write that joke about Drake?’ I told him, ‘I did not. That was Skyler Higley’s work.’ And I have to give credit where it’s due.”

The episode also includes Conan’s account of his interaction with Mick Jagger backstage at the Oscars and how he spontaneously improvised his joke about Timothée Chalamet’s suit.

New episodes of Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend air every Monday on the SiriusXM app or wherever podcasts are available.
