Benny Blanco, known for his keen listening skills, is opening up about his creative process alongside fiancée Selena Gomez as they prepare to release their collaborative album, I Said I Love You First. The couple recently shared details about how the album came to life during a Spotify First Look interview.
In a teaser for the interview, Gomez, 32, explained how their daily conversations inspired the album. She shared that their talks, often starting with casual thoughts like “what’s on my mind?” or “how does that make you feel?”, naturally led to the creation of music, without ever formally discussing the album’s direction.
Blanco, 37, humorously revealed how he contributed to the songwriting. “I felt like your personal journal,” he said, to which Gomez responded, “Well, you are!” He explained further, “I was constantly jotting down whatever you said, no matter where we were.” Blanco recalled moments when Gomez would say something significant, and he’d immediately note it on his phone, recognizing it as potential song material.
Gomez admitted she noticed Blanco taking notes but added, “It didn’t bother me. I could just sit there and talk.” She laughed as she reflected on how comfortable she felt during their conversations.
So far, the couple has released three tracks from I Said I Love You First: “Scared of Loving You” on February 13, “Call Me When You Break Up” with Gracie Abrams on February 21, and “Sunset Blvd.” on March 14.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, the couple, who got engaged in December 2024, revealed that their focus has been more on music than wedding planning. Blanco joked, “I think every day she’s planned a new wedding in her head,” adding that they’re living in the moment. He also pointed out that Gomez couldn’t help but admire her engagement ring while they spoke.
Gomez, reflecting on their album process, said, “This is such a special time. We get to pour our hearts into this album and share it with the world.” She emphasized that this is her main focus at the moment.
A press release for I Said I Love You First promises fans a glimpse into the couple’s relationship, describing the album as a natural result of their creative collaboration. The album captures their entire story—from their lives before meeting, to falling in love, and envisioning their future together.
I Said I Love You First will be available for streaming on Friday, March 21.
