In his Monday night monologue, late-night host Jimmy Fallon addressed the current state of Canada-U.S. relations, using humor to lighten the mood.
Fallon joked about a potential meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. He quipped that the two leaders would spend their Tuesday “dividing up certain assets.” Fallon humorously added, “Trump was like, ‘He’ll take Ukraine, I’ll get Canada, we’ll alternate weekends on Greenland.’”
The comedian also poked fun at a recent call from a French politician, who suggested the U.S. return the Statue of Liberty to France, claiming America no longer deserved the iconic gift. Fallon took this opportunity to suggest that Canada might take a similar step and repatriate Canadian actor Ryan Gosling.
“We’re taking him back — give him back. We need Ryan Gosling,” Fallon said, drawing cheers and applause from the audience.
Fallon’s remarks come amid a wave of comedic commentary on strained Canada-U.S. relations. Other comedians, like Mike Myers and Stephen Colbert, have also made jokes about the growing tensions, including mocking U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum.
