Drew Carey poked fun at a “dull” prize that a The Price Is Right contestant won recently, though she walked away with more than just the item the host joked about. During the March 19 episode, contestant Lisa Hoshauer claimed her win on Bidder’s Row with a bid of $525 on a set of Riedell Roller Skates, valued at $528.
When she reached the stage, announcer George Gray explained the three prizes up for grabs in the game Make Your Move—one worth up to $99, another up to $999, and the last worth up to $9,999. Contestants must match three sliding markers (red, yellow, and green) under the correct prices for each prize to win all three.
Gray started by announcing the first prize: “We are going to start off with some excitement!” before revealing, “It’s a new pencil sharpener.”
Host Drew Carey jumped in with his trademark humor, exclaiming, “Yes! Most exciting hour of daytime television!”
The next two prizes seemed to spark more excitement in Hoshauer: a 128-gig smartphone and a trip for two to the Hamptons for six nights. However, Carey had more to say about the pencil sharpener: “I know the pencil sharpener doesn’t sound all that glamorous, but who wants to live in a world with dull pencils? Not me. Not Drew Carey.”
After explaining the game’s rules, Carey couldn’t resist a final quip: “Imagine getting on the plane to the Hamptons with a pocket of sharp pencils, and TSA can’t do anything about it.”
Hoshauer correctly placed the prices, selecting $55 for the sharpener, $69 for the smartphone, and $8,479 for the trip. She won all three prizes, then went on to the first Showcase Showdown, where she bid $28,500 on designer sneakers, heels, a home office, and a pair of 2025 Suzuki Boulevard C50 motorcycles. Unfortunately, she was over by just $72, as the actual retail price was $28,428, and she did not win the Showcase or the prizes.
The clip was shared on YouTube, where fans reacted to Hoshauer’s close win. One fan wrote, “Honestly that pencil sharpener, sheesh. That was probably the easiest Make Your Move this season. Anyway, good for Lisa, but she just missed her Showcase by $72, ugh, that’s been happening all week.” Another commented, “I love this game,” while a third added, “Yay! Lisa made her move successfully.”
