Eknath Shinde on Kunal Kamra’s ‘Traitor’ Jokes: ‘I Don’t Focus on Who Says What’

by Diana Ward

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has commented on the controversy surrounding comedian Kunal Kamra’s jokes, stating that there should be limits to freedom of speech. He emphasized that actions have consequences and expressed his disapproval of vandalism. However, Shinde also clarified that he would not engage in responding to the allegations against Kamra.

At a BBC Marathi event, Shinde said, “Freedom of speech is important, and we understand satire. But there should be a limit. This is like paying someone to speak against another person.” He refrained from discussing the vandalism of the studio where Kamra had performed, adding, “I do not justify vandalism, but action causes reaction.”

Shinde also took aim at Kamra’s previous comments about the Supreme Court, the Prime Minister, and other public figures. “This is not freedom of speech; this is working for someone,” he said. He stressed that he no longer responds to such allegations, preferring to let his work speak for itself. “I have always prioritized work. Projects like the Atal Setu, Coastal Road, and Metro projects, which were halted, have now been restarted under my leadership. We focus on development and welfare.”

Shinde concluded, “I don’t focus on who says what; my work is my answer.”

In response to the controversy, Kunal Kamra has been summoned by the Khar Police after an FIR was filed against him for public mischief and defamation. This followed protests by Shiv Sena workers, who vandalized the Habitat Studio where Kamra performed. Several party members involved in the incident have been arrested.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has demanded an apology from Kamra, claiming that the Deputy CM was insulted. Fadnavis warned of potential legal action, adding that while humour is acceptable, derogatory remarks against leaders cross a line.

Kamra defended his actions, stating that the right to free speech should not be reserved only for those in power. Meanwhile, opposition leaders have criticized the FIR against Kamra, calling it a “mockery of law.”
