Saying goodbye to talented artists is never easy for Adam Levine.
On the Monday, April 7 episode of The Voice, the Maroon 5 frontman faced a difficult decision during the knockout rounds between Ari Camille and Britton Moore. “It’s that time again,” Adam, 46, said in a confessional. “I have to pit good people against good people. There’s nothing I can do about it. If you can win this knockout round, you can go far in the competition.”
Ari, 21, opened the round with a soulful performance of Faith Evans’ “Love Like This.” Britton, also 21, followed with a country rendition of Zac Brown Band’s “Free.” Before the performances, Adam expressed his dilemma, saying, “Ari is special, but Britton is a bit of a chameleon. He’s exploring, and that’s a good thing. Both are very different, but very talented. This is going to be tough.”
Fellow coach Kelsea Ballerini admitted she couldn’t choose a winner, while Michael Bublé was taken aback by the fact that both contestants were only 21 years old. “Both of you earned the right to stay in this competition,” John Legend told the singers.
Despite all the positive feedback, Adam still found the decision challenging. “You both did exactly what was needed, which is great for you but really tough for me,” he said. “I don’t know what I’m going to do yet. Please don’t ask me, Carson [Daly].”
When it was finally time to make a decision, Adam joked that the pressure might make him leave the show. “I don’t know. I quit,” he said, earning laughs from the audience. He then announced, “I think I’m going to go with the person who’s most ready to move forward right now, and the winner of this knockout is Britton.”
Without hesitation, John, 46, used his steal to bring Ari to his team for the playoff rounds. “She really exudes star power,” he said. “She’s back on Team Legend. Come on home!”
Adam, reflecting on his decision, explained, “I went with my gut. Britton is so good. I couldn’t let him go.”
