Italian journalist Alessandro Alciato has weighed in on Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s recent statement hinting at retirement, calling it a “joke.”
In an interview shared by Amazon Prime via FCInterNews, Alciato dismissed the 36-year-old midfielder’s comments. Mkhitaryan, alongside Inter Milan manager Simone Inzaghi, spoke to the media ahead of the team’s upcoming match against Bayern Munich. During the press conference, Mkhitaryan suggested that he might retire at the end of the season.
Despite his age, Mkhitaryan continues to play a key role for Inter Milan, making his retirement comments a topic of much discussion. His current contract with the club is set to run until 2026, though it’s unlikely he will sign an extension. Many within the club hope he will remain until at least next summer.
However, there is still a possibility that Mkhitaryan could change his mind, particularly if Inter wins the treble this season. The team is in the hunt for the prestigious “triple crown,” and Mkhitaryan’s contributions are crucial to their pursuit. A treble victory would provide a perfect farewell to his playing career.
Nevertheless, the former Armenia international still has plenty of energy left for the remainder of the season.
