New Delhi, April 22, 2025 — Actor Kamal Haasan has sparked debate online after a light-hearted comment he made during a promotional event for Mani Ratnam’s upcoming film Thug Life, which also stars actress Trisha Krishnan. The moment, which was captured on video and widely shared on social media, drew mixed reactions from the public.
During the event, Trisha was asked about her favorite food. She responded with, “I like eating them all, but I like boiled banana more. What’s it called?” She was referring to pazham pori, a popular South Indian snack made from ripe bananas.
Kamal Haasan then reminded her of the name and jokingly added, “She doesn’t know the name but likes putting it in her mouth.” The comment, delivered in jest, made Trisha laugh. Kamal Haasan also gave her a friendly pat on the knee, indicating the exchange was playful. The clip quickly went viral on X (formerly Twitter), prompting a wide range of responses.
Some users criticized the veteran actor, claiming the comment had a suggestive tone. One user wrote, “All the senses have gone to the air, I think! Worst.” Another questioned, “Why do you always interpret things with double meaning?”
However, many others defended Kamal Haasan, insisting the remark was innocent and taken out of context. Supporters argued that the joke was a harmless form of banter, commonly used in Tamil households.
“This is a very jovial dialogue, usually said by moms and dads at home. There’s nothing disgusting about it,” one user explained. Another added, “There’s no double meaning. Trisha forgot the name of the food, and Kamal just responded that she eats it but doesn’t know its name.”
One fan expressed frustration with the backlash, saying, “Nothing wrong here, da. It’s pathetic that some people are so used to perverted content that they see innuendos everywhere.”
Another comment read, “I’m Tamil and not a Kamal fan. But I don’t think he meant it in the way some are interpreting. We all tease friends when they forget something.”
Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam, marks a significant reunion between the filmmaker and Kamal Haasan after nearly 40 years since their iconic film Nayakan (1987). The star-studded cast includes Silambarasan, Trisha Krishnan, Ashok Selvan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Joju George, Abhirami, Nassar, Ali Fazal, Pankaj Tripathi, Sanya Malhotra, Rohit Saraf, and Vaiyapuri. The film is scheduled to hit theatres on June 5.
